This AP view of the thoracic inlet shows marked displacement of the trachea to the right by a large left-sided goitre which extends inferiorly to just below the sternal notch. The trachea is slightly narrowed in its transverse diameter just above the level of the thoracic inlet. No calcification can be seen within the goitre. Although any displacement or narrowing of the trachea in the AP plane can be readily assessed on a lateral view of the thoracic inlet, it may be difficult to determine whether or not there is any significant extension of a cervical goitre into the mediastinum.
